Book Description

The number one dental title in the world, STURDEVANT’S ART & SCIENCE OF OPERATIVE DENTISTRY, is the book of choice for dental students and practitioners. Designed to be used by students throughout their dental education program and into professional clinical practice. Covers in detail the appropriate material needed to understand theory by using a heavily illustrated, step-by-step approach related to biological rationales. Both practical and scientific, this book is rich with restorative and preventive concepts fully supported by sound clinical and laboratory research. This is the most complete operative dentistry text on the market, integrating both theory and practice. Starting with dental anatomy and occlusion, STURDEVANT’S ART & SCIENCE OF OPERATIVE DENTISTRY presents the most current information on cariology, infection control, dental materials, and patient assessment — including medical concerns. All chapters have been thoroughly revised to reflect the numerous changes that are occurring in dentistry. New techniques are presented so today’s students and practitioners may incorporate them into their approach to providing the care that patients require and often demand.

Sturdevant’s text book, October 22, 2006

Overall a good text book. The text is clear on most topics and easy to read with good diagrams and many pictures.
Each chapter starts with chapter outline that guides the reader through the book and makes it more organized. It covers topics such as structure of the teeth (e.g. Enamel, pulp-dentin complex, cementum), Cariology (The lesion, etiology, prevention and control), Bio-materials (e.g. glass-ionomers, composites, liners & bases, sealants, dental cements), Fundamentals in tooth preparation (e.g. class I,II,III,IV,V,VI restorations), Instruments and equipments for tooth preparation, Composite restorations (e.g. tooth preparations, clinical techniques), Amalgam and Metal restorations and a lot more. However not much details on materials of inlay/onlay restorations. The quality of the book is good and the price tag is reasonable.

If you have no experience in the field of dentistry, but you want a biological or chemical background to the subject, this is the book to get. Other books were too advanced for my level of knowledge (undergrad interested in dentistry); however, this book is structured like a general biology textbook (very comprehensive and understandable). I strongly recommend this book if you are interested in dentistry, the science behind dentistry, prepping for dentistry school, or if you merely want to know your dentist’s lingo.
